Our Journey
Recreating The Navy Blend: Master Blender's Reserve 2021
On 31st July 1970, the last tots of rum were issued to the Royal Navy – a day forever known as Black Tot Day. In 2020, to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of this day, our master blender set out to make an exceptional blend inspired, that would become the first of our annual Black Tot Day releases. In this bottle you’ll find rum from Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad – including a 23 year old rum from the lost Caroni distillery, a 42 year old Port Mourant, as well as flagons from the original Royal Navy blend. Only 5000 bottles were made of what would become a firm favourite amongst the rum community. But the journey didn’t stop there...
Inspired by the Navy tradition of perpetual rum blending, our master blender decided to create our very own perpetual blend, allowing him to evolve and develop flavour over years. Using 50th Anniversary Rum as the base, he first re-casked this into Sherry Hogsheads for 6 months. He then added more exceptional casks from around the Caribbean, as well as casks from Beenleigh, Australia – an oft-forgotten component of the original Navy Blend. The result is our Master Blender’s Reserve 2021 edition –encapsulating a brighter, more fruit-forward style of blended Navy Rum.
Once again, a third of this blend has been re-casked and is waiting to be married with this year’s cask selection – we look forward to revealing the new Master Blender’s Reserve to you on this Black Tot Day, 31st July 2022.
